Years in the making, we are more than proud to introduce the Rukus x New Balance 440 "Voodoo Doll."
The culture of Louisiana is as strong and robust as they come. Traditions, tales and truths have been passed down and around the bayous we call home. Voodoo has been running through our rivers since the early 18th century, in practice, spirit and stories. This shoe serves as a testament to that piece of our culture.
We pulled inspiration from Voodoo culture, represented in the materials, fabrics and design. The shoe features a shaggy suede upper to the toe and heel pieces, as well as a burlap mid-paneling. The side "N" Logo hit is a tack-stitched pebbled leather on the outside, and a purely tack stitched "N" on the inside.
The sneakers also feature tack-stitching and a suede heel panel. Each heel piece includes an actual button sewn on, mirroring the eyes of Voodoo dolls. Rukus branding is featured throughout the shoe, with our cursive logo on the tongue tag and our throwback 103 mark on the inside tag. The same 103 logo is found pressed into the leather on the heel tab.
Last but not least, the insoles feature a custom Rukus vèvè (a symbol used in Voodoo culture) on top of a wood grain graphic. This is a nod to Voodoo rituals, where vèvès are drawn on the floor.
The "Voodoo Doll" will be released on December 1, 2023 at the Rukus pop-up inside of Perkins Rowe at 10156 Perkins Rowe Suite 110, Baton Rouge Louisiana 70810.
